Lyceum’s Mbomiko named NCAA Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum’s Cameroonian import Aziz Mbomiko won the NCAA Player of the Week award after powering the Pirates to a stunning 80-76 upset of the heavily favored Letran Knights last week.
Mbomiko scored 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, five steals and an assist to help seal the win for Lyceum, who now owns the distinction as the only team in the league to have beaten both Letran and three-peat champions San Beda.
“I’m not as tall and as big as the other big men but I make up for it with my heart, desire and will to win,” said Mbomiko, who is the only African import in the league who had to try out for a spot in the team.
Lyceum coach Bonnie Tan said the 6-foot-3 Mbomiko was a blessing to their squad.
“Only a few probably know that he is a walk-in. That’s why we are blessed to have him in this team,” he said.
Mbomiko is the first player from Lyceum to win the weekly honor given by the country’s sportswriters.
