Rapid chess tourney opens in QC on Sunday
MANILA -- The first Pineda-Santos-Camer three division rapid chess tournament unveils its opening on Sunday at the Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School (RMCHS) in Cubao, Quezon City opposite Nepa Q-Mart.
No less than Asia’s first Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre, an RMCHS batch 68 alumni, will grace the opening ceremonies of the three-division (kiddie 14 year-old and below, womens and non-master) tournament aimed to discover future world class chess players.
“Rain or shine, the chess tournament will go on," said event coordinator Dr. Jenny Mayor, also the RP six-time executive champion.
Quezon City mayor Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, vice-mayor Herbert “Bistik” Bautista, fourth district congresswoman Nanette Castelo-Daza, councilor’s Bayani Hipol, Vincent Belmonte, Bong Suntay, Babes Malaya, Edcel Lagman, Dante de Guzman and Bernadette Hererra-Dy are also expected to attend the opening rites. Local arbiter Gatz Luz will lead the invocation.
Aside from trophies and medals, at stake in the tournament is a total of P17,500 cash prizes with P6,000 plus a new pair of shoes going to the non-master champion.
Winners in the 14 year-old and below and womens division will get P2,000 each.
