Aguilar to work out for San Antonio Spurs
MANILA, Philippines – Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) top draft pick Japeth Aguilar continues to work towards making his NBA dream come true.
Aguilar, the top pick in the 2009 PBA Rookie Draft, is set to work out for the San Antonio Spurs today, according to RealGM.
Aguilar recently tried out for the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Developmental League, wherein he was among the 20 players who participated in a scrimmage.
The 6-foot-9 Aguilar impressed some of the Bakersfield Jam coaches, but they also had some concerns regarding Aguilar's tendency to be passive and how he will transition from being a post-player in the Philippines to playing in the perimeter in the NBA.
Jeff Garcia of the blog Project Spurs noted that Aguilar is a "long-shot to make it with the Spurs or the NBA," however.
"Though the Spurs do need size, they need a big that is physical, and a bit more established in the NBA unlike Aguilar," Garcia said.
Aguilar played college ball for the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles and the Western Kentucky University. He was nabbed by Burger King with the top pick in the 2009 PBA Rookie Draft, but spent most of his career with the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.
Aguilar was also a mainstay of the first Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team.
