Senate lauds Jones Cup MVP Tenorio
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Senate on Monday commended Barangay Ginebra cager LA Tenorio for his remarkable performance in the recently concluded 34th William Jones Cup in Taipei.
Sen. Pia Cayetano filed Resolution No. 863, which sought to congratulate and commend Tenorio for being named the Most Valuable Player in the Jones Cup.
Tenorio led Smart Gilas Pilipinas II to the gold medal in the Jones Cup, scoring 20 points in the final game against the United States, including the game-winning jump shot with less than 20 seconds to go.
Smart Gilas wound up defeating the United States 76-75 to finish the tournament with a 7-1 slate.
"At 5'8, Tenorio was among the smallest players in the league, and the smallest player during the championship game, but despite this, he rallied his team to victory against the towering United States squad," the resolution read.
"Tenorio deserves praise and recognition for bringing pride and honor to the country, and for being a role model who manifests the value of hard work, perseverance, discipline and humility," it added.
The resolution also commended Tenorio as one of the top players in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Tenorio and Gilas head coach Chot Reyes paid a courtesy call to the Senate Monday, where the point guard was presented a copy of the resolution.
