Donaire to return in November against Darchinyan
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Months after suffering a loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is back in the boxing scene – this time, in a rematch against Armenian boxer Vic Darchinyan, whom he defeated six years ago.
Donaire knocked out Darchinyan in the fifth round of their fight, giving the Armenian his first-ever professional defeat.
“The last time that he fought, when he lost to Rigondeaux, he deserved to lose that fight,” Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum said. “But I think he is gonna come back and be the Nonito Donaire that he used to be, the great dynamic fighter.”
Although it is still premature to determine the fight order, Arum said it is up to HBO if the fight will be a co-main event.
“Nonito has been fine, and at the end of the day, we always settle on a fair purse. We’ve been fair with him and I believe that he and (Donaire’s wife) Rachel have been fair with us,” Arum said.
Darchinyan is no stranger to Filipino opponents. Aside from Donaire, he has fought Diosdado Gabe and Glenn Donaire, as well as Z Gorres.
Top Rank has confirmed that the bout will take place in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 9 at the featherweight division.
