La Salle, Arellano boost Fr. Martin stock
MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle Green Archers, Arellano University Chiefs and San Beda Red Cubs came up with contrasting victories last weekend to remain in contention for semi-final berths in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup.
La Salle escaped with a 70-69 victory over the Enderun College Titans behind free throws from Julian Sargent and Benoit Mbala in the dying seconds of their game last Sunday at the St. Placid Gym in the San Beda campus.
Sarget scored 19 points, while Mustapha Haruna had 16 and Mbala added 13 for the Green Archers, who posted their fourth win in six games in Group B.
The Titans were ahead in the final minute when Mbala and Sargent scored from the free throw line in the last 8.6 seconds.
Haruna then made the key defensive plays as the clock winded down to keep the Titans from making a final attempt.
The Green Archers and the Titans now share the third spot in their group and remain in contention for a semi-final slot in their bracket along with Perpetual Help (5-1), National University (5-2) and San Beda (4-1).
Meanwhile, the Arellano University Chiefs got 13 points from Renzy Busa as they turned back the San Sebastian Stags and hiked their slate to 4-2 in Group A.
They are now behind the Ateneo Blue Eagles (5-1) and the Lyceum Pirates (5-0) in their group.
In the juniors division, Fil-Jordanian Sam Abuhijleh and Kenneth Alas fired 16 and 15 points, respectively, as the San Beda Red Cubs walloped the Mapua High School Red Robins, 86-68.
The Red Cubs are now two games closer to an eight game sweep of their group.
