MANILA, Philippines – Lyceum bucked the absence of six of its players as it stunned Jose Rizal, 79-72, in overtime to end an eight-game drought spanning a little over two months in the 88th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Gian Mallari, Dexter Zamora and Shane Ko fired 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively, as the Pirates nailed their first win since stunning the Mapua Cardinals, 78-74, last July 12.
It was Lyceum’s third win overall against 11 defeats.
The Pirates pulled off the victory despite the absence of Nelson Mendoza (injury), John Azores (one-game suspension), and the foursome of Vence Laude, Floricel Guevarra, Chris Cayabyab and Mark Francisco, who were cut from the team for not attending classes.
The Bombers, who missed guard Alex Almario and Ivan Camasura due to dengue, fell to a share of fourth spot with the idle Letran Knights on 8-6 slates.
