La Salle beats UST, steps closer to twice-to-beat
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – De La Salle University (DLSU) nipped University of Sto. Tomas (UST) 69-64, to secure a playoff for the twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
Jeron Teng had 19 points as he helped the Archers complete a 7-game sweep of the second round elimination of the tournament.
The win also enabled La Salle to force a 3-way tie with early semifinalists National University and Far Eastern University with identical 10-4 slates.
The Bulldogs, however, will take the top seeding by virtue of a superior quotient.
La Salle will now have to battle the Tamaraws for the top two seeding and the twice-to-beat bonus that goes with it.
Despite the second round sweep, Archers head coach Juno Sauler said they can’t afford to celebrate just yet.
“No sense of accomplishment for me,” said Sauler during the postgame interview. “It’s still on a per-game basis, day-to-day basis.”
Although the Tigers started aggressively, the Archers found their range late in the first quarter to take a 15-13 lead.
Aljon Mariano rallied the Tigers two minutes remaining in the second period, but Teng and Norbert Torres uncorked a 12-3 run to make it 37-30 for the Archers.
La Salle widened the gap by 14 points in the third, 48-34, prompting UST to fire back with a 9-0 rally of its own.
Thomas Torres then connected from 3-point range to stop the Tigers on their tracks.
In the fourth, the Tigers again launched a run that pulled them within 57-59, with 5 minutes remaining. But Teng and LA Revilla came to the rescue by pushing La Salle ahead, 64-57.
Teng finished the game with 11 rebounds and 2 assists, while Norbert added 14 points.
Abdul had 18 points for UST, while Mariano tallied 16.
The Tigers are now tied with the Ateneo Blue Eagles with a 7-6 win-loss record. The two teams will have to square off on Wednesday for the remaining Final Four spot.
