'Pep Squad ng Bayan' goes for 4th straight title
MANILA – UAAP Cheerdance champ University of the Philippines (UP) goes for a fourth straight title when the 2013 UAAP Cheerdance Competition (CDC) takes center stage at the MOA Arena on Sunday.
The UP Pep Squad took on a serious theme last year by sporting shaved heads while dishing out a routine about “freedom of expression.”
This year, UP will take on a lighter theme which seeks to be interactive.
"When we perform, the audience watches. Now, the audience will perform with us while we're dancing and while they're doing stunts," said assistant coach NJ Antonio in an interview with UAAP Sports’ Josiah Albelda.
This doesn’t mean their routine will be easier.
Antonio said their choreography will also be very different from last year.
"Everything is new," he said. "We won't repeat any stunts and it is totally different in terms of choreography."
"We increased the level of difficulty, but not that much so we can lessen the possibility of creating errors."
UP bested the Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad and the National University (NU) Cheer Squadron.
FEU settled for runner-up honors, while NU won third place.
The FEU Cheering Squad, 2009 CDC champion, vowed to give UP a tough battle despite fielding a rookie laden lineup.
"Our goal is to be on top. Nothing is impossible," said coach Jacqueline Alolor in an interview with Paolo Mariano. "We just pray and hope that we'll deliver a flawless performance."
Also seeking podium finishes are the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe, the De La Salle Animo Squad, the Ateneo Babble Battalion, the University of the East (UE) Pep Squad and the Adamson Pep Squad.
