Petron targets 8th straight win vs GlobalPort
MANILA, Philippines – The Petron Blaze Boosters, already assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarter-finals, will gun for their eight consecutive victory when they take on the GlobalPort Batang Pier at the Cuneta Astrodome on Sunday.
Petron clinched the top spot at the end of the elimination round after nipping Alaska, 103-100, in a thrilling game last Friday.
But Petron coach Gee Abanilla said the Boosters’ approach to the game won’t change even though they have already assured themselves of the twice-to-beat bonus.
“It’s basketball. We’re in the business of winning games. Our mindset is, we want to play no matter what the situation is,” he said. “We want to build character for our team.”
Moreover, Abanilla is wary of GlobalPort, who totes a 3-4 record and is pursuing a slot in the playoffs.
Last Wednesday, GlobalPort showed fortitude in overcoming a 20-point deficit to beat Meralco, 91-79, with Sol Mercado coming up big in crunch time.
The victory allowed the Batang Pier to snap a three-game losing streak, including a stunning collapse against Barako Bull last week which saw them squander an 18-point advangtage.
Game time is at 6:30 p.m.
