NEW YORK – New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jesse Carlson were both ejected after sparking a bench-clearing brawl at Yankees Stadium on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays won the game 10-4 but the result was largely overshadowed by the wild fighting, which left some players and one manager nursing minor cuts and bruises.

The violence erupted after Posada and Carlson twice clashed in the eighth inning.

The umpires managed to avert a melee the first time but were powerless to stop players from both teams spilling out of the dugout to trade punches after the second incident.

Tensions between the teams had been threatening to boil over after two Toronto batters were hit by pitches earlier in the game.
