Roach: Game plan not working vs Marquez

MANILA, Philippines – Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach will have to come up with a better idea on how to defeat Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez as his prized ward, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao of the Philippines, is set to take on “Dinamita” for a fourth time on December 8.

Roach admitted that he has not yet come up with a good game plan for Pacquiao to defeat Marquez.

“I haven’t come up with a good idea yet to know what I need to do for him to win that fight, but I’m thinking every day,” Roach said, as quoted by ESPN UK.

Pacquiao and Marquez have fought three times, with all three fights ending in controversy.

“The game plan I’ve set for him for the last three fights, I know it’s the right game plan,” Roach said. “But the thing is, it’s not working in the fights.”

In their latest meeting last November, Pacquiao was heavily favored but once again struggled against Marquez’s counter-punching, and could only muster a disputed majority decision win.

Roach is in the midst of a difficult stretch in his career as a trainer, as three of his top fighters have lost their most recent fights.

Pacquiao was controversially upset by Timothy Bradley in June, which was followed by a fourth-round knockout defeat of British fighter Amir Khan in July at the hands of Danny Garcia.

Last weekend, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. suffered his first career loss when he was outpointed by Argentina’s Sergio Martinez.

But Roach is hard at work for the fourth Pacquiao-Marquez bout, which fans hope will provide a decisive end to the two boxers' saga.

“As I watch tapes of his opponent, we will come up with an answer,” Roach promised.
