FEU ousts La Salle in UAAP juniors
MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Baby Tamaraws outlasted the De La Salle Zobel Junior Archers, 65-55, in their semi-final game of the UAAP Season 76 juniors' basketball tournament Tuesday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
JJ Domingo scored 18 points, including the dagger three-pointer with less than two minutes to go, as the defending champions Baby Tamaraws kept their title retention bid alive.
The Junior Archers trailed 37-51 entering the fourth quarter but unleashed a 16-6 scoring blast that allowed them to get within four points, 53-57, with still over four minutes to go.
But FEU countered with four straight points, including Domingo’s triple, which proved to be enough to hold off the Junior Archers.
The Baby Tamaraws will now advance in the step-ladder semi-finals to face off the second-seeded Ateneo Blue Eaglets, who hold a twice-to-beat advantage.
Marvin Lee added 12 points for FEU, who shot 42% from the field and out-rebounded Zobel 50-32.
Renzo Subido, in his final game for the Junior Archers, fired 17 points. Aljun Melecio and Karl Maldinger each scored 11 points.
The game was tied at 16-all at the end of the first quarter, but FEU outscored Zobel 16-6 in the second frame to seize control of the contest.
The Baby Tamaraws will take on the Blue Eaglets on Saturday, September 21, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The winner of the FEU-Ateneo series will advance to play the National University Bullpups, who earned an outright Finals berth after winning all 14 games in the elimination round.
