Mayweather plans to fight twice in 2014
MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to climb into the ring twice in 2014, once in May and again in September.
“You’ll see me again in May. I’ll be back,” said Mayweather in a Boxing Scene interview. “I don’t know if it’s May 4th or May 5th, but it will be Cinco de Mayweather.”
Mayweather is coming off a majority decision victory against Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday in Las Vegas. He also out-pointed Robert Guerrero in May this year.
The two bouts were part of Mayweather’s six-fight contract with Showtime and CBS, and the American boxer said he plans to honor the rest of the deal over the next two years.
“I’d like to fight in May (2014). I don’t have an opponent yet, and then fight again in September. And then, fight again in May (2015), and then fight in September (2015),” Mayweather said.
This is the first time that Mayweather has fought twice in a calendar year since 2007, when he fought Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in the span of eight months.
