Alaska hacks out win vs Barako
MANILA – Alaska made crucial stops in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to complete a come-from-behind win against Barako Bull, 91-89, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday.
Defense was the Aces’ key in beating the Energy Cola, who were limited to a single field goal in the last three minutes of the game.
“It’s nice to win one with defense,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo in a PBA.ph report following their first win after two straight setbacks.
Barako Bull foiled 5 of 6 tries during that 3-minute span, and Alaska surged ahead via a 14-4 run from a 77-85 count.
Wendell McKines paved the way for the Aces with double-double figures of 21 points and 15 rebounds. Cyrus Baguio top-scored for the locals with 15.
But Trillo maintained that it was their defense that caused the Energy Cola’s fall.
“I noticed in our losses that we lacked that defensive edge, the activity,” said Trillo. “In the kind of playoffs atmosphere in a game like this, it’s all about defense.”
The win boosted Alaska’s hopes of getting a top four seat in the quarterfinals.
The Aces will need to dispose of Air21 on Sunday to barge into the top four with a twice-to-beat bonus.
“We feel good we’re playing Air21,” said Trillo. “Now we have a shot at fourth. The guys are healthy and I feel they’re starting to peak. It’s nice to win, set ourselves up for a chance at that top four.”
