NU's Parks named Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines -- Two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Ray Parks has been named the Player of the Week after helping the National University (NU) Bulldogs clinch the top spot at the end of the elimination rounds of the UAAP Season 76 men's basketball tournament.
Parks got his teammates more involved this season, and this was most evident in NU's 70-65 victory against Ateneo last week that allowed them to earn a twice-to-beat advantage for the first time ever.
For instance, instead of going for an isolation play against Chris Newsome, Parks saw teammate Denice Villamor wide open at the corner, and dished the ball for the dagger triple that gave the Bulldogs a 68-63 lead with 22 seconds left.
"For me, it means a lot not just on the individual standpoint, but it speaks of the whole team," said Parks. "This won't happen if it wasn't (for my teammates) stepping up and playing well."
Parks, the MVP in the last two seasons, finished with 24 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist as NU recorded its 10th win in 14 games, marking their best-ever elimination round performance in the Final Four era.
Needing only to win once to advance to the Finals for the first time since 1970, NU will face either Ateneo or University of Santo Tomas in the semi-finals this weekend.
The son of former seven-time PBA Best Import Bobby Parks averaged 18.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game in the elimination round.
"It's great to win individual awards, but the championship is what we are gunning for," said Parks.
