Donaire will control Nishioka fight: trainer
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Robert Garcia expects world super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire to be able to control his fight against Japanese boxer Toshiaki Nishioka.
Donaire will face Nishioka on October 13 at the Home Depot Center in California, in a fight wherein four belts are at stake.
Nishioka is widely considered to be among the best fighters at the 122-pound division, something that Garcia acknowledged in an interview with Boxing Scene.
“(Nonito) will have to be very careful because Nishioka is a very experienced fighter,” Garcia said. “But Nonito is too fast, too smart, and I think he will be able to control the fight from the beginning.”
Donaire is currently training at the Undisputed Gym in San Carlos City, California, and Garcia is happy with his ward’s progress as fight night nears.
“He looks really good, better than I expected,” Garcia said. “He’s throwing his jab real good and has good defense.”
Donaire has been confident about his training camp, telling Ryan Maquiñana of the CSN Bay Area that “everything’s looking good so far.”
“We’ve been working out with everybody here. So far, so good,” Donaire said. “We’re just trying to get more sparring in, and trying to get that 10, 12 rounds so that we’ll be ready.”
