San Beda throttles Benilde, reclaims lead
MANILA – San Beda College got back at the top of the standings by vanquishing St. Benilde, 65-46, in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Thursday.
Art de la Cruz had 14 points for the Mendiola-based dribblers, who improved to 11 wins against 2 losses.
San Beda is now one victory ahead of second-running Letran Knights.
The Red Lions immediately pounced on the Blazers’ early miscues and zoomed to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. San Beda closed the first canto with a 25-2 advantage.
St. Benilde, led by Mark Romero’s 12 points, never threatened San Beda throughout the game.
The loss brought the Blazers down to 5-8 behind fifth placer Jose Rizal University.
In the other game, a shorthanded San Sebastian side survived a fourth quarter run by Lyceum to escape with a 58-53 win.
The Stags leaned on CJ Perez and Ranimark Tano who had to step up in place of Jamil Ortuoste and Brad Guinto.
Perez finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Tano tallied 12 caroms.
Ortuoste and Guinto missed the game due to sickness.
