The 'Pacman' says he might retire soon
MANILA, Philippines – Reigning WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao admitted he made a big mistake when he underestimated Juan Manuel Marquez in their fight last November.
The bout, a 3rd meeting with his Mexican rival, ended in a controversial unanimous verdict in favor of Pacquiao.
“Masyado ko lang in-underestimate [si Marquez]. [‘Yun ang] mali ko talaga ‘yung last fight,” he said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.
Pacquiao said they didn’t expect Marquez to grow bigger in time for their 3rd fight.
He also admitted that they omitted things in their preparation for the Marquez fight such as his plyometrics training.
“Hindi kami nag plyometrics dun sa training na ‘yun dahil maliit naman si Marquez e,” said Pacquiao.
“Hindi ko ginagawa ‘yung mga training na ginagawa ko kay [Oscar] De La Hoya, [Miguel] Cotto at [Antonio] Margarito.”
Marquez nearly pulled off an upset in that fight with his accurate counter punching.
Pacquiao, however, managed to take the fight to the tenacious Mexican to hammer out a decision win.
The Filipino champion said he might consider retiring soon and concentrate on politics especially after he renewed his Catholic faith.
“Malapit na rin [akong magretiro]. Parang nokokonsensiya na ako manakit ng kapwa ko,” said Pacquiao.
The Filipino boxer is set to fight again sometime in May or June.
