Gustafsson: I can beat Jones anyday
MANILA – Light heavyweight contender Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson is confident he can orchestrate a huge upset against UFC champion Jon “Bones” Jones this weekend.
Jones is known for his unorthodox fighting style, but the 26-year-old Swede believes he can counter Jones’ every move.
“Everything's he's gonna throw at me at the fight, I've seen it before and I can respond to it,” said the mauler in Countdown to UFC 165. “It doesn't matter what the situation is, I will have an answer.”
The 6’4” Jones has successfully defended the light heavyweight crown five times since winning it from Mauricio Rua in 2011.
But Gustafsson is one inch taller than Jones and a highly aggressive striker. He claimed to be a perfect match against Jones.
“If I'm gonna take the belt from anybody, it's gonna be [from] him,” said Gustafsson. “I can beat Jon Jones anyday. I want it more than him.”
Jones shrugged off Gustafsson’s statement.
Despite their similarity in age and height, Jones claims he’s more experienced than the Swedish fighter.
“He said he can beat me anyday and he wants it more than me? C'mon, son,” said Jones.
UFC 165 takes place in Ontario, Canada this Saturday. The card will be aired on Balls Channel on Sunday.
