Fronda, Decena score wins in junior chess
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino chess players Jan Jodilyn Fronda and Jerad Docena both notched victories in the ninth round of competition of the 2013 World Junior Chess Championships Monday at The Ness Hotel in Kocaeli, Turkey.
Fronda defeated International Master (IM) Zhai Mo of China, while Docena bested Fide Master Benjamin Arvola of Norway.
Fronday now has a total of 5.5 points in the competition, good for a share of 15th place in the girls category.
Docena, for his part, has 5.0 points and shares the 32nd place in the Open division.
Fronda will meet IM Ayelen Martinez of Argentina in the 10th round, while Docena will face off against IM Vahap Sanal of Turkey.
Grand Master (GM) Irina Bulmaga of Romania has 7.5 points to lead the girls division, while GM Yu Yangri of China has 8.0 points to lead the Open division. -- By Marlon Bernardino
