Orcollo, Corteza win gold in World Cup of Pool
LONDON – The Philippines won the gold medal in the 2013 World Cup of Pool in London after the pair of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza defeated their Hungarian opponents, 10-8, in a tight contest at the York Hall.
In the race-to-10 format in the finals, Team Philippines immediately took a 2-0 lead against Holland, but the match was quickly pegged at 2-2.
Orcollo and Corteza would use their extensive knowledge of ball placement as well as experience to take control, 7-3, but Holland rallied to take the next five racks and led 8-7.
But Orcollo and Corteza pounced on a mistake by their opponents in the 16th rack to claim the next three racks and win, 10-8.
This is the third time that the Philippines has won the World Cup of Pool.
Orcollo and Corteza will bring home a trophy as well as $60,000.
