3 Pinoys eye titles in HK chess tourney
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino chess players Roel Abelgas, Marie Antoinette San Diego and Nelson Villanueva are aiming to earn a coveted International Master (IM) title as they compete in the Hong Kong International Open Chess Championship.
The three will compete in the tournament, which will be held at the University of Hong Kong from September 27 to October 1.
Abelgas earned two IM norms in the Manny Pacquiao Cup/Asian Continental Chess Championship last May. He was also the champion in the blitz division of the 2013 Malaysian Chess Festival.
San Diego, on the other hand, is a member of the victorious Philippine team that won a total of 65 medals in the standard, rapid and blitz events in the 14th ASEAN+Age-Group Chess Championships in Thailand last June.
San Diego also won in the grand finals of the 2013 National Age Group Chess Championship in Taguig last April.
Villanueva, for his part, is fresh from a runner-up finish in the Sabah Grande Chess Open, which was won by another Filipino, IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City. -- By Marlon Bernardino
