GlobalPort's J-Wash named Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – GlobalPort forward Jay Washington has been named the PBA Player of the Week for the period of September 16-22 after his career-game helped power the Batang Pier to their first-ever playoff appearance.
Washington fired 30 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and had five blocked shots and two assists as GlobalPort defeated Ginebra, 113-106, in overtime last Friday to clinched a quarter-finals berth.
“J-Wash has been struggling in our past few games, and the way he rose to the challenge is a clear sign of how good a player he is,” GlobalPort coach Junel Baculi told PBA.ph. “He didn’t let his recent funk get him down.” [http://pba.inquirer.net/31393/picking-up-the-cudgels]
“Instead, he took the challenge by the horn and came out a winner.”
Washington has not scored more than 14 points in his first eight games with GlobalPort, and made only seven of his 21 field goal attempts in their last two contests.
But against Ginebra, Washington made 10 of his 20 attempts, including six of his 10 three-pointers. He scored six points in overtime, including a jumper that made it 109-106 with 50 seconds to go.
GlobalPort will be up against the fourth-seeded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, who will have a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarter-finals.
