PH athletes heavy favorites in HK memory tilt
MANILA, Philippines – Members of the AVESCO-Philippine Memory Team are set to compete in the the 1st Hong Kong Open Memory Championship to be held on September 28 and 29 in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
The Filipinos are the heavy favorites coming into the competition, which will features 10 events that will test the intellectual abilities and memory skills of the participants.
Among the Filipinos vying for the crown in Hong Kong is 12-year-old Jamyla Lambunao, a Grade 7 student of St. Scholastica’s Academy Marikina, who is competing in the kids’ division.
In her first year of competition last year, Lambunao placed second overall in the kids’ division at the 2012 World Memory Championships in London, England.
Taking the challenge in the juniors’ division are Kian Christopher Aquino, Robert Bryan Yee and Rhojani Joy Nasiad.
In the adult division, the AVESCO team will be led by the country’s two Grandmasters of Memory, Mark Anthony Castañeda and Erwin Balines. Also competing are Anne Bernadette Bonita, Abbygale Monderin, Axelyancy Cowan Tabernilla, Ydda Graceille Mae Habab and Robert Racasa, who also serves as coach of the team and head of delegation.
The two-day event that drew 109 participants from 10 countries will follow the World Memory Sports Council national standard of competition that includes Names and Faces (5 minutes), Binary Numbers (5 minutes), Random Numbers (15 minutes), Abstract Images (15 minutes), Speed Numbers (5 minutes), Historic / Future Dates (5 minutes), Playing Cards (10 minutes), Random Words (5 minutes), Spoken Numbers (100 seconds & 300 seconds) and Speed Cards.
“This is a field where Filipinos have a distinct competitive advantage,” said Racasa, who is aiming to secure a Grandmaster of Memory norm in Hong Kong. “The AVESCO team firmly believes that this is sport where we can reap and bring honor to our country and we promise to do our best.”
