Mayweather return draws one million pay-per-view purchases
LOS ANGELES - Floyd Mayweather's ring return with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over Juan Manuel Marquez generated one million pay-per-view television purchases, HBO said Friday.
Mayweather, a six-time world champion in five different weight divisions, returned from a 21-month retirement last Saturday and looked far from rusty as he launched a campaign to show he's still the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
That's a title lately bestowed by most on Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao, who is slated to take on Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas on November 14.
A victory for Pacquiao could pave the way for a mega-fight with Mayweather, and the figures for Mayweather's latest outing indicate that would indeed be a money-spinner.
Mayweather-Marquez generated 52 million dollars in domestic pay-per-view revenue and marked just the fifth time in pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has reached seven figures, HBO said.
"September 19 was an event that connected with sports fans across the country," HBO pay-per-view chief Mark Taffet said. "Floyd Mayweather has clearly reinforced his standing as a top attraction and fans are excited about his return to the sport."
