WBO exec says Melindo deserved victory

MANILA, Philippines – An official from the World Boxing Organization (WBO) believes Filipino flyweight Milan “El Metodico” Melindo deserved his victory over Venezuelan boxer Jean Piero Perez, despite the close nature of their fight.

In the main event of Pinoy Pride last weekend, Melindo outpointed Perez to win via majority decision.

“It was surely a close fight,” said Leon Panoncillo, the WBO’s vice president for the Asia-Pacific region who supervised the Melindo-Perez bout.

“Of course, if they had only looked at the latter part of the bout or the last five rounds, they had reason to say that Perez won because Melindo was getting tagged with jabs and combinations delivered by Perez on the latter rounds, which is understable,” Panoncillo told Phil Boxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz.

But Panoncillo pointed out that the fight was a “12-round championship fight.”

“We have to account for the whole 12 rounds to determine the winner,” he added. “Melindo surely did enough on the early rounds, from rounds one to seven, to rack up the points.”

Panoncillo told Nathanielsz that Perez looked sharper in the latter rounds compared to Melindo, who sustained a cut from an accidental clash of heads.

“The accidental cut that caused the severe cut on the eighth round was surely a factor,” Panoncillo said. “The corner-men did not have the composure to advise Melindo what to do.”

But despite Perez’s performance in the last few rounds, Melindo had done enough in the earlier part of the fight to secure the victory, according to Panoncillo.

“This bout was not a controversial decision. Melindo won because of the earlier lead he had sustained until the end of the seventh round,” he added.

Two judges scored the fight in Melindo’s favor, 115-113 and 116-112, while a third bout had it tied, 114-114.

With the victory, Melindo remained undefeated in his professional career with a 28-0 record, including 11 wins via knockout. He currently holds the WBO international flyweight title.
