Viloria wants to be champion again
Former WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria is back on track as he takes steps to become a world champion once again.
Viloria gets that chance when he clashes with IBF champion Ulises Solis (27-1-2, 20 KOs) in a Top Rank-promoted bout in Macau on December 13.
The 27-year-old had a good workout in a comfortable eighth round win over Mexico’s 32-year- old Juan “El Nino” Javier Lagos in the highly successful initial promotion of Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions at the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon, California on Thursday (Friday in Manila).
With the win, Viloria improved to 23-2 with 13 knockouts while Lagos dropped to 15-13-2 with 4 knockouts.
In an overseas telephone interview, Viloria whose parents are from Ilocos Sur, said it was a very good fight. “[I needed] to get into [it] and get on my toes. It helped me a lot to prepare myself.”
Viloria benefited from going eight rounds instead of an early knockout.
The former US Olympic team member said he would train harder over the next two months and “work my butt off” because Solis is a tough fighter. "We are going to try to establish ourselves against Solis.”
