NU faces La Salle in UAAP women's finals
MANILA, Philippines – The National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Finals of the UAAP Season 76 women’s basketball tournament after routing the Adamson Lady Falcons, 66-47, in their winner-take-all game Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The top-seeded Lady Bulldogs were pushed to the brink as the Lady Falcons forced a do-or-die game, but NU proved to have too much firepower.
With four players scoring in double-figures, NU outscored Adamson, 33-10, in the final period to claim the victory and advance to the UAAP finals for the first time in school history.
“It feels wonderful because it’s the first time for the team and for the school,” NU head coach Pat Aquino said in a UAAP Sports TV interview. “I’m so happy for the kids. It’s a great honor to be in the finals.”
NU will face off against the second-seeded De La Salle Lady Archers, who advanced after beating the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses last week.
“La Salle is a good team, they’re a shooting team, they play defense,” said Aquino. “Of course, my team also wants to win this for the first time. It’s going to be an exciting match-up and hopefully we can come out victorious.”
Kristine Abriam had 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Anne Gupilan scored 14 points. Risa Paig and Andrea Tongco scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
NU 66 – Abriam 17, Gupilan 14, Pagi 11, Tongco 10, Antiquiera 6, Bernardino 4, Sison 2, Bonleon 2, Seno 0, Escoto 0.
