MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 1) Far Eastern University (FEU) superstar guard Terrence Romeo has no plans of turning professional yet and vows to return to school next year to play in his final season for the Tamaraws.
Romeo, the UAAP Season 76 Most Valuable Player, has an option to turn professional, but he immediately shot down the idea.
“Siyempre, lalaruin ko ‘yun,” Romeo answered when asked if he plans to return for his final year. “Siyempre, utang na loob ko sa FEU. Walang Terrence Romeo kung walang FEU.”
Moreover, Romeo acknowledged that he has a lot of work to do before considering a move to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
“’Yung pro, marapi pa akong kailangang i-improve bago ako pumunta doon,” he said.
The Tamaraws’ season ended on Wednesday after they were beaten by the De La Salle Green Archers, 71-68, in the Final Four. Romeo scored 14 points and dished out seven assists, but could not take over in crunch time for the Tams.
“Sobrang disappointed ako,” Romeo said. “Sa totoo lang, kaya namin talagang mag No. 1 or No. 2, kaya namin talaga. Pero ‘yun nga, bilog ‘yung bola. Hindi mo naman masasabi na laging shoot lahat ng tira namin, tapos laging sablay sa kabila.”
FEU head coach Nash Racela said that had the Tamaraws won the title, he would have advised Romeo to turn pro already.
“I was thinking nga, kung nag-advance kami sa Finals and we won the championship, I would be the one to recommend na mag-pro na siya, but hindi eh,” Racela told reporters after their loss.
But Romeo remains committed to the Tamaraws’ cause, especially after the disappointing end to their campaign this season. He plans to continue to work on his game when he suits up for Big Chill in the PBA D-League.
“Trabaho na naman,” said Romeo. “Kailangang mag-focus pa ako, tsaka kailangan ko pa i-correct ‘yung mga dapat kong i-correct. At ibang level na ang competition sa D-League.”
