UFC: Gustafsson to wait as Jones faces Teixeira
MANILA, Philippines – Alex Gustafsson will have to wait for his rematch against Jon Jones as the UFC light heavyweight champion has chosen to fight Glover Teixeira next.
"That's what the champ wants," UFC president Dana White said in ESPN.com. "We'll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey."
Jones became the first light heavyweight fighter in UFC history to make six title defenses by carving out a unanimous decision against Gustafsson in UFC 165.
But the 6-foot-5 Gustafsson was the only fighter that was able to threaten Jones in his 20-fight career after the Swedish challenger gave Jones a busted lip and a huge cut in his right eyebrow aside from dealing the champion multiple bruises.
But Jones promised to give Gustafsson his rematch after fighting Teixeira.
"I said before the [Gustafsson] fight my sights were set on breaking the record," Jones said in a statement. "I want to crush the record. I want to beat the record so bad it can never be broken.
"I'm going to fight Glover and I will answer all the critics about the Gustafsson fight. I will fight Gustafsson after I fight Glover. I won the fight but I look at it as a blemish on my record because some people think I didn't. I promise you, he will be next," he said.
