Pacquiao takes on heavier sparring mate
MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao began his sparring sessions on Friday, two months ahead of his welterweight bout against Mexico’s Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios.
According to Philboxing’s Rich Mazon, the Filipino superstar took on 160-pounder Marlon Alta at the Wild Card Gym in General Santos City as his original sparring mate, Korea’s Min Wook Kim failed to make his flight to the Philippines.
The session lasted for three rounds with Pacquiao showing off his quickness and footwork.
“Sobrang bilis ni Manny, ang galing ng footwork,” said assistant trainer Nonoy Neri.
Pacquiao is heading to Manila to attend to social commitments and his congressional duties. He will also spend a few sessions at a gym somewhere in the metropolis.
His coach Freddie Roach will be joining Pacquiao in training a day after manning Miguel Cotto’s corner on October 6.
Pacquiao’s fight against Rios is scheduled to take place on November 24 in Macau.
