PH makes big leap in world rankings after FIBA Asia stint
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines climbed 11 notches up in the world men’s basketball rankings following Gilas Pilipinas' second place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship.
From 45th place, the Philippines is now ranked 34th in the world, ahead of 35th-ranked Japan.
Gilas coach Chot Reyes the ranking should inspire the Philippines to set loftier goals for the near future.
“This 11-place jump gives us more impetus to do even better in d next 3-yr cycle: '14 Worlds, '15 FIBA-Asia, & hopefully, '16 Olympics #PUSO!” he tweeted.
The Philippines has accumulated 22.8 points by beating Kazakhtan in the quarterfinals and South Korea in the semis of the qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Basketball Cup.
Gilas eventually bowed to the taller Iranian squad which took the 2013 FIBA Asia crown.
Chinese Taipei is now ranked No. 44, while Kazakhstan is at No. 52. Iran is 14 places higher than the Philippines at No. 20.
US remains on top of the standings, followed by China and Argentina.
