Pacquiao training off limits to outsiders
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Freddie Roach wants strict implementation of their “off limits policy” when Manny Pacquiao begins training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California.
Roach’s Filipino assistant Marvin Somodio told Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea that the boxing trainer wants no distractions for Pacquiao as they prepare for the Juan Manuel Marquez fight.
“'Yun na ang ibig sabihin noong notice na ipinaskel sa loob at labas ng gym,” Somodio said. “No exception. Pati siguro kamag-anak.”
Roach wants stricter implementation this time around unlike in the past, when Pacquiao's hangers-on flood the gym premises whenever the boxer trains.
“Kasi no matter how strict the rule is implemented, kapag nakita ng security na kaibigan ang gustong pumasok, pinapayagan. Pag hindi pinapasok, galit pa. At hila-hila pa ang mga kasama kaya bago mo malaman, puno na ang gym,” Somodio said.
He said Roach and Pacquiao want an impressive outing against Marquez, especially after the Filipino’s lackluster performances in his recent fights.
He added that Pacquiao also wanted to put to rest all doubts of his victories over Marquez.
“Both coach Freddie kasi and Manny want to win impressively and bring to a close the many questions that surrounded his previous three fights with Marquez, kailangan naka-focus lahat sa preparasyon at walang kahit anong distraction,” said Somodio.
Roach earlier said he wanted nothing less than a knockout from Pacquiao when the Filipino slugs it out against Marquez.
“To be the pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world, I think we need to knock this guy out,” Roach said in an interview with Boxing Scene. “I need to get Manny that killer instinct back.”
