Three tied for lead in Nat'l Youth Chess
MANILA, Philippines – Daryl Unix Samantila of Malaban drew with Carlo Caranyagan of Rizal in their fifth round match on Sunday to gain a share of the lead in the standard competition of the 2013 National Youth Chess Championships in Vito Cruz, Manila.
Samantila is tied for the lead with Paulo Bersamina of Pasay City and John Fleer Donguines of Pasig City, who finished their own fifth round match in a fighting draw.
Samantila, Bersamina and Donguines all have 4.5 points in the event for boys under-15.
According to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) executive director Jayson Gonzales, a total of 120 players are participating in the National Youth Chess Championships, which is being held for the first time.
Players from Cebu, Baguio, Ilocos Norte, Vigan, Candon, Pangasinan, Angeles, Tarlac, Olongapo, Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas and the Bicol region are participating in the three-day event.
Genlaiza Pearl Bagorio is leading in the girls under-15 division, while Michael Concio Jr. leads the boys under-9 division. Prince Louise Oncita is leading the girls under-19 division. All three players have four points. -- By Marlon Bernardino
