Controversial ref in Nietes-Garcia Hilares bout replaced
MANILA, Philippines – World Boxing Organization (WBO) has already appointed a new referee for the light flyweight title clash between former minimumweight titlist Donnie Nietes and Ramon Garcia Hilares.
WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarel appointed Robert Byrd to take the place of controversial referee Joe Cortez, according to a report by Ronnie Nathanielsz in Philboxing.com.
Cortez came under fire for his performance in the controversial bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz.
Mayweather scored a knockout victory over an unguarded Ortiz. The knockout punches were thrown while Cortez wasn’t looking.
Byrd will be attending the Nietes-Garcia Hilares fight together with ring judges Carlos Ortiz, Lisa Giampa and Danrex Tapdasan.
The fight, which is the main event of Pinoy Pride 9, is scheduled to take place on October 8 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.
ABS-CBN will air the fight the following day.
