Kevin Ferrer can stop Jeron, says Jeric
MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) swingman Kevin Ferrer made a name for himself after making life difficult for National University (NU) star Bobby Ray Parks in their Final Four games in the UAAP Season 76 tournament.
Ferrer, a former UAAP juniors Most Valuable Player, limited Parks’ production while at the same time hitting timely triples as the Growling Tigers upset the top-seeded Bulldogs to advance to the Finals.
There, they will face the De La Salle Green Archers, and Ferrer will likely be tasked with defending DLSU star Jeron Teng.
“For sure Kevin really wants to get in my head,” Jeron said in a press conference on Monday. “So I’m gonna prepare for it, and I will try to keep focused on the game. Hindi ako magpapa-distract sa kanya.”
Jeron’s older brother, Jeric, admitted that he has been giving Ferrer some tips on how to defend his sibling.
“I think Kevin already knows how Jeron plays because they were teammates before during their RP (youth team) days,” said Jeric. “Ako naman, I think I know how my brother plays, so sinasabi ko ‘yung mga tendencies niya to my teammates.”
“Kailangan namin mag-defense. Alam namin na sa kanya galing ‘yung offense, sa drive and kicks, so alam namin na he’s a big part of bakit nananalo ‘yung La Salle,” added Jeric.
But he also expressed absolute confidence in Ferrer, his lanky teammate who clearly irritated the two-time MVP Parks with his physical defense.
“I think Kevin can stop Jeron,” said Jeric.
Jeric stressed, however, that he will chastise his teammates if they foul his brother with intent to hurt.
“Pag-incidental contact, hindi. Pero pag sinadya, baka. Kasi siyempre kahit papaano, kapatid ko din si Jeron,” Jeric answered when asked if he will get mad at his teammates should they hurt his brother.
“Siguro nandoon pa rin ‘yung pagsasabihan ko ‘yung teammates ko na, parang let’s just play physical, but not rough. Iba na ‘yun eh,” he said.
