San Mig's Devance named Player of the Week
MANILA, Philippines – San Mig’s versatile forward Joe Devance won Player of the Week honors for the period of September 23 to 29 after helping the Coffee Mixers win Game 1 of their PBA Governors Cup semi-finals series against the Meralco Bolts.
Devance scored a conference-high 17 points to help San Mig take an 83-73 victory over Meralco last Sunday.
But in an interview with PBA.ph, San Mig coach Tim Cone said Devance’s contributions go far beyond the box score.
“Joe does a lot more for us than what shows up in the box-scores,” said Cone. “He handles the ball, can set up the offense, and probably is our best player in terms of understanding our execution.”
“He’s a point forward in the strictest sense, which allows us great flexibility. He’s showing all that in this playoff so far, and has been a huge key to our success,” he added.
But for Devance, it’s all part of the job.
“I’m just trying to do my little part, trying to help the team win,” he said.
Prior to his 17-point performance against Meralco, Devance had been averaging 12.3 points in the Governors’ Cup.
