Chavez mulls Roach reunion after controversial win
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. may bring back Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach into his team following his much-criticized victory over Brian Vera last weekend in California.
Chavez eked out a unanimous decision victory over Vera, with the judges scoring the bout 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. It was a highly unpopular decision, however, as most boxing pundits at ringside believed Vera deserved to win the bout.
Chavez did not have Roach in his corner for the Vera fight, but he plans to change this in the near future.
“I think Freddie Roach is a great trainer,” Chavez said in a Boxing Scene report. “Probably for my next fight, I’m going to hire him, to train with him.
“Of course, he’s a great trainer,” he added.
Roach had helped turn Chavez into a world champion, but the two parted ways after the young Mexican lost to Argentina’s Sergio Martinez in September 2012.
Roach, a five-time Trainer of the Year, still works with Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and was recently hired as the coach of Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto.
