Pacquiao already past peak, claims trainer
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Naazim Richardson believes that Manny Pacquiao is already past his peak.
But Richardson, who manned Shane Mosley’s corner against Pacquiao two years ago, added that the Filipino superstar can still hammer out a decision win over the younger and hungrier Brandon Rios.
“If Pacquiao has anything left, I can see him stealing a decision from Rios,” said the trainer in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
For Richardson, Pacquiao was at the top of his career when he fought and knocked out Miguel Cotto in 2009. But since then, the Filipino boxer has gradually declined, he said.
“The Cotto thing might have been the height, that might of been the moment. It might have been the moment where you were most surprised and where he was the most dominant. That may have been his crowning jewel,” said Richardson.
He said Pacquiao has already lost his wow factor.
“What can Pacquiao do for us that’s gonna surpass what he’s done for us?” Richardson asked. “If he knocks Brandon out, are we gonna say he was better than when he knocked Cotto out? It won’t be. Maybe he can salvage something and create enough noise.”
