Hunter excited to work with Khan
MANILA, Philippines – Virgil Hunter, the 2011 Trainer of the Year, is excited to begin working with former world light-welterweight champion Amir “King” Khan of Britain even as his stable of boxers continues to grow.
Aside from Khan, Hunter also officially added Alfredo “Perro” Angulo to his stable, which already includes 2011 Fighter of the Year and world super middleweight champion Andre Ward.
“I’m excited to work with Amir Khan. Again, I think it’s a great fit for the stable,” Hunter said in an interview with Boxing Scene. [http://www.boxingscene.com/virgil-hunter-discusses-additions-khan-angulo--57783]
Hunter feels that with Angulo in the fold, Khan will be better prepared in his future fights.
“Some of the fighters that loom in Amir Khan’s future (such as) the (Lucas) Matthysse’s, the Brandon Rios, the Ricky Hattons, and all of a sudden I have ‘El Perro’ to help him in the gym,” he said.
“Those names I just mentioned are nowhere near him (Khan) as far as applying pressure in fighting that type of fight. Now I have at my access 'El Perro' to work with Amir Khan, to get Amir Khan acclimated to some of that type of styles that have given him problems,” Hunter added.
He also insists that he does not have a “number one” fighter, even with the presence of Ward who is widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
“I don’t have a number one. I look at everybody as the same... Andre welcomes the addition of a fighter the caliber of Amir Khan and the fighter of the caliber of Alfredo Angulo,” he said.
“We started when (Ward) was nine years old, so he wants other people to benefit from what he’s benefited from. In that case, I have the right guy for a situation like this. It wasn’t like it was a difficult decision,” he added.
Khan hired Hunter to replace Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach after he suffered two consecutive losses.
Khan lost to Lamont Peterson last December via a disputed decision but was brutally knocked out in the fourth round of his fight against Danny Garcia last July.
He is set to return to the ring against Carlos Molina on December 1.
