MANILA, Philippines – Jon Jones maintained his standing as Sports Illustrated’s No. 2 pound-for-pound mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter after surviving a near-upset in the hands of Vitor Belfort.

Although Jones remained behind pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva, SI.com’s Jeff Wagenheim said the UFC light heavyweight champion made a strong case in proving his status among the world’s best MMA fighters.

Wagenheim said Jones showed vulnerability when he was trapped in Belfort’s armbar during the UFC 152 main event.

Even more impressive, according to Wagenheim, is Jones’ ability to survive the submission move.

“He's no longer the uber-athlete with whom no one can compete. He's now a guy who has faced adversity and come through. That makes him far easier to relate to. And it solidifies his standing among light heavyweights and everyone else who competes in this sport,” said the Sports Illustrated analyst.
