Meralco eyed Marbury as import replacement
MANILA, Philippines – In an attempt to save its PBA Governor’s Cup bid, the Meralco Bolts management has considered hiring former NBA superstar Stephon Marbury to take the place of injured import Mario West.
Meralco is trailing San Mig Coffee, 1-2, in their best-of-5 semifinals series and is in dire need of an import after West went down with a shoulder injury last Friday.
Meralco team manager Butch Antonio told Spin.ph’s Richard Dy they have actually considered hiring Marbury, who visited Manila this week to donate shoes through one of PBA’s outreach programs.
“We inquired about Stephon, but he has a contract with his team in China,” Antonio said.
Marbury, who used to play for the New York Knicks, is currently under contract with the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
His agent in Asia, Sheryl Reyes, thanked Meralco for considering Marbury.
“Maybe in the future .. Thanks for the thought of hiring him,” said Reyes through her Twitter account.
