Cebu edges Bacolod in Nat'l Chess tourney

Cebu City defeated tournament host Bacolod City-A to assume solo leadership after three rounds in the National Inter-Cities and Municipalities chess team championship at the city’s New Government Center.

A Sportsnews.ph report said Cebu scored 2.5 points against Bacolod A’s 1.5.

International master (IM) Richard Bitoon and Jayson Salubre provided successive wins to push Cebu one point ahead of National Inter-Province champion Tagaytay City, Quezon City, Talisay City and Mandaluyong City.

Bitoon defeated national master (NM) Hamed Nouri in 44 moves of the Sicilian, while Salubre beat Francis Glen Panes in 38 moves also of the Sicilian.

Voltaire Sevillano of Cebu split the point with Jose Vito Tapulgo in a marathon match of 101 moves of the Reti.

Cebu also hurdled its first two assignments, beating Maritima, 3.5-.5, in the first round and Muntinlupa City, 3.5-.5, in the second round.

Sevillano, Natividad and Salubre scored victories for Cebu over Maritima after Bitoon was held to a draw by unheralded Roger Sarip.

In the second round, Bitoon humbled Oliver Barbosa, Sevillano beat Roberto Biron and Salubre vanquished Ferdinand Casabuena.

Tagaytay City, bannered by grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo and Allan Macala, swept Bohol, 4-0, in the first round; South Cotabato, 3-1, in the second round; and drew with Mandaluyong City, 2-2, in the third.

Laylo beat Elmer Sumngat (Bohol), Sander Severino (Cotabto) and fellow GM Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor (Mandaluyong City).

Macala defeated Glicerio Pardillao Jr. (Bohol) and Ferdinand Leysa (Cotabato) but lost to Allan Cantonjos (Mandaluyong).

A total of 22 cities and municipalities are seeing action in the tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philipines (NCFP) and supported by the Bacolod City government.
