Pacquiao to use new techniques vs Marquez
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino fight king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao plans to unveil new techniques when he faces his great rival, Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez, in their fourth encounter on December 8 in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao and Marquez have fought three times, with all bouts ending in controversy. They battled to a draw in 2004, despite Pacquiao knocking down Marquez three times in the first round.
In the rematch in 2008, Pacquiao won via split decision, and in the trilogy fight last November, the Filipino fighter once again got the judges’ nod as he won a majority decision.
But for Pacquiao, the fourth encounter needs to end on a decisive note.
“I want to erase the last fight and any doubts in number four,” Pacquiao told RingTV.
In the trilogy bout, most boxing pundits believed Marquez had done enough to deserve the victory as Pacquiao put together a lackluster effort amid rumors of marital troubles.
But Pacquiao told RingTV that he will be focused on the fight this time around.
“I have to study and train using new techniques and strategy, and apply techniques never used in my previous fights,” he said.
“I will fight and train like the old Manny, the 25-year-old Manny,” he said.
Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, has stressed that his fighter needs to knockout Marquez in order to ensure the victory.
“We need a knockout to win. There’s no way we’re going to win a decision this time,” Roach said.
Pacquiao will begin training in Roach’s Wild Card Gym this week.
