NU sweeps Ateneo to win UAAP juniors title
MANILA, Philippines -- The National University (NU) Bullpups completed a historic 16-0 season by defeating the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 81-74, in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 76 juniors basketball Finals at the San Juan Arena on Wednesday.
The Bullpups won all 14 games in the elimination round and had a thrice-to-beat advantage in the Finals against the Blue Eaglets.
Ateneo had come close to winning Game 1, but they squandered a 10-point lead in the final two minutes and NU went on to win in overtime, 101-93.
In Game 2, NU opened up a 27-20 lead after the opening frame and did enough to hold off Ateneo, who were aiming for their first juniors title since 2010.
NU has now won the UAAP juniors title for the second time in three years.
Hubert Cani scored a team-high 25 points to go along with six assists and was named the Finals MVP.
Ateneo's Thirdy Ravena, the UAAP Season 76 juniors MVP, scored a game-high 27 points to go along with 13 rebounds and six assists in his final game for the Blue Eaglets.
The Bullpups are the first team to go 16-0 in a season since the thrice-to-beat incentive was instituted.
