Roach: Cotto may spar with Pacquiao
MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Miguel Cotto may help Manny Pacquiao in training for future fights, according to boxing coach Freddie Roach.
Cotto, who was knocked out by Pacquiao in 2009, now has friendly ties with the Filipino champion since they both train under Roach.
The boxing trainer said Cotto may go as far as sparring with his former foe but admitted that these sessions may not be like when they fought four years ago.
“They’re good friends now, so I’m not sure how hard they’ll go,” Roach said in ESPN UK.
Cotto recently knocked out Delvin Rodriguez to make up for his back-to-back losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout.
Meanwhile, Buboy Fernandez said Pacquiao will need more sparring rounds in preparation for Brandon Rios.
Pacquiao’s co-trainer said the Filipino boxer will have to reacquaint himself with his defense to avoid the same mistake he did against Juan Manuel Marquez.
“Talagang kulang pa sa sparring," Fernandez told Philboxing’s Eddie Alinea.
“Sa depensa, kailangan matuto si Manny na laruin ang kalaban. Hindi dapat magpatama. Kilala natin si Rios na may suntok din. Kapag nakasingit, delikado,” added Fernandez. “Hindi na mauulit ang nangyari sa laban against Marquez.”
Fernandez said Pacquiao, who is training in General Santos City, has decided to start sparring even without Roach.
“Sparring normally starts at the arrival of coach Freddie. Well, maybe Manny felt, he’s ready na for it kaya siya mismo ang nag-decide na umpisahan na,” Fernandez said.
