PH basketball mourns Roehl Nadurata's death
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine basketball lost Tuesday night one of its pillars as Roehl Nadurata, the long-time top deputy of Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao and a former Olympian, died due to complications of lung cancer.
Nadurata, who saw action for the University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP, died at the age of 74. He also played for several national teams in his heydays including the team that won the 1962 Asian Games gold and the squad that competed in the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City.
Nadurata forged one of the most enduring partnerships in the PBA with Guiao starting in Swift in 1990. They were inseparable since then.
From the PBA to the now defunct Philippine Basketball League (PBL), Nadurata stayed in Guiao's side serving as head of Technical committee when the latter was the amateur league's commissioner.
Guiao brought him along in his PBA coaching comeback with Red Bull in 2000 then to Burger King and now, Rain or Shine.
Nadurata's health started to deteriorate last conference prompting Guiao and the Rain or Shine team to dedicate their games to him. Before he died, Nadurata was gifted by the team with its first ever title as a franchise in the Governors' Cup Finals opposite the heavily favored Bmeg Llamados now called San Mig Coffee Mixers.
His partnership with Guiao resulted in 6 PBA championships (2 with Swift, 3 with Red Bull and the last with Rain or Shine).
His remains lie at Floresco Funeral Homes in A. Mabini St. near Caloocan City Hall, where he once served as a councilor of its second district.
The PBA will pay respect to Nadurata during today's double-header featuring the Alaska Aces-Meralco Bolts match followed by the Petron Blaze Boosters-Barako Bull Energy Cola game.
"We will offer a minute of silent prayer in today's games for the peaceful repose of Tata Roehl's soul and to show the PBA family's sympathy and condolences with his family and loved ones," PBA Commissioner Chito Salud told philstar.com in a text message.
The whole basketball community has been mourning his death in the social media since last night.
