Roach arrives in Gensan, begins training Pacquiao
Coach brings in Zou Shiming, English boxer
MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s heavy training has begun with the arrival of his celebrated trainer Freddie Roach in General Santos City on Thursday.
Upon landing at the Gensan airport, Roach immediately went to Pacquiao’s mansion where the boxer was eagerly waiting for his coach.
“Seryosong training na talaga [ito],” said the former world champion. “Mas maganda to dahil nagdala pa siya ng mga bago ka-partner natin sa sparring.”
Pacquiao was referring to English boxer Liam Vaughan and rising Chinese star Zou Shiming.
It is a welcome development for the Filipino boxer who has been having a tough time looking for sparring partners.
Pacquiao currently has middleweight Marlon Alta and undefeated Ghanaian welterweight Fredrick Lawson as sparring mates.
Vaughan said he looks forward to be sharing the ring with the Filipino icon.
“It's gonna be hard work. We're gonna put him in a good shape, looking forward to it,” he said.
Roach’s arrival has brought positive vibes to Pacquiao’s camp, which suffered a minor setback as conditioning coach Justin Fortune won’t be able to join them in General Santos City.
Fortune, who was supposed to replace Alex Ariza, is having visa problems.
But Roach is positive that they will get the job done even without Fortune around. “We just work hard and when you work hard great things happen,” he said.
