MANILA - Purefoods Tender Juicy spoiled the debut of top pick Japeth Aguilar as it walloped Burger King, 93-80, at the start of the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup on a high note Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Kerby Raymundo outmatched the celebrated rookie while Peter June Simon Rafi Reavis and James Yap contributed to the onslaught to give their team an impressive victory.

Raymundo, a teammate of Aguilar in Powerade-Team Pilipinas, tallied a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Purefoods in notching the easy win.

“It’s always nice to win your first game,” said Giants head coach Ryan Gregorio who also drew 17 markers from Simon and 14 points and game-high 20 rebounds from Reavis.

“At least for this game, we were witnesses of wheeling and dealing of our works in the off-season. We started on a right foot but it will take so many games to get into the destination we want to be in,” he added.

Yap contributed 12 including the first 7 points of the third period that gave Purefoods its biggest lead of the game at 26, 57-31 with 10:02 remaining.

The Giants were never threatened since then.

Chico Lanete led the Whopper with 14 points while Gary David chipped in 13.

Aguilar, who just signed a 1-year deal 2 days before the opening, had 10 points in his pro debut but was just 2-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the free throw area in 24 minutes of play.

“We did not put emphasis on him (Aguilar) but obviously he has the skills that can make his team grow,” said Gregorio, who lauded his own rookie Rico Maierhofer in his debut.

Maierhofer, the No. 2 overall pick, had 9 points and 8 rebounds in his first game in the PBA. The former La Salle standout started the game for the Giants and played a total of 26 minutes.

So dominating was Purefoods it was still holding a 72-52 bubble entering the final period.

Wynnie Arboleda scored five straight points that sliced the margin to 57-72 but Reavis responded with 4 straight points and Maierhofer scored on an acrobatic lay-up to restore a 78-57 cushion with 8:57 left in the game.

“The new guys performed well tonight,” said Gregorio who also drew quality minutes from balik-Purefoods Marc Pingris and Paul Artadi.

Purefoods’s 13-point win was the most lopsided in a season-opening game in the last 17 years or in 1999 when Mobiline defeated Tanduay, 90-64, where rookie Asi Taulava dominated Eric Menk and Sonny Alvarado.

The Giants broke away in the second quarter behind the exploits of Raymundo, Simon and Roger Yap and led by as much as 23 points, 45-22, on Raymundo’s three-point play off Aguilar with 2:32 left in that stage.

The Whoppers responded with 9 straight points to close the gap, 31-45, before Raymundo, who had 13 points in the first half, completed another 3-point play again on Aguilar to enter the second half with a 48-31 cushion.

Former senator Robert Jaworski tossed the ceremonial ball and was joined by fellow greats Philip Cezar, Atoy Co, Manny Paner and Freddie Hubalde at the midcourt.

Burger King team manager and board chairman Lito Alvarez officially opened the 35th season of the league.

The ten teams and guest squad Smart Gilas had their traditional parade including their muses including ABS-CBN talents Anne Curtis of Barangay Ginebra and Pokwang of Coca-Cola.
